Earlier this month, we held a "Fusion" Meet & Greet on campus. It was an informal opportunity for all "Fusion" participants to meet each other and to share and exchange
ideas. Though we missed a few individuals that couldn't make it, we had a great and productive time together. We introduced ourselves to each other, shared our ideas, and enjoyed eating delicious food. Artist Tauna Coulson was introduced as the curator and she spoke briefly about curatorial aspects of the show. Tauna brought with her the owner of the Blitzer Gallery, Robert Blitzer. Professor David Lederman and his wife brought an incredible spread of cheese and sandwiches. Artist Brad Burkhart brought a platter of colorful and roasted vegetables that looked like a piece of artwork in itself and almost too beautiful to eat.
Artist Linda Cover wrote that "It was a great gathering of creative souls." Brad wrote that he could "... sense the excitement and interest in trying to make the connections between art and science." It was great to see graduate student Ross Greenwood and artist Chris Johnson working together at the white board, gushing with creativity, enthusiasm, and feeding off of each other's thoughts. Linda and David were hitting it off too - they discovered that they both share an interest in pop art and want to express David's science through pop art. Linda is bravely branching out from her more traditional work of photography that is transformed through a printing process. Brad is taking a different approach all together. He hung some of his artwork in Dr. Hendrik Ohldag's lab in the hopes that it may influence the science happening in the lab. Stay tuned for an update from Brad.
Since the Meet & Greet, Artist Ann Baldwin May (paired with graduate student Benjamin Lehman) has been working on a piece inspired by ATLAS, a particle physics experiment at the large Hadron Collider at CERN. Ann wrote that "the responses from visitors to my studio and my FB posts have been over the top fabulous! I think you have tapped into something special."
